Michael Wacha of the St. Louis Cardinals came within a foot of baseball history last night. With two outs in the top of the 9th, Wacha needed only to retire Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals for a no hitter. However, Zimmerman hit a chopper just out of Wacha's reach and Zimmerman reached 1st base on an infield single, despite a valiant effort by shortstop Pete Kozma. Wacha was the 3rd pitcher to lose a no hitter with 2 outs in the 9th this season; The first time that many pitchers have lost a no hitter that late in a game since 1990. Still, Wacha pitched a 1-hitter and the Cardinals won 2-0, lowering their magic number to clinch the division to 3, which is reason enough for a Gatorade shower.
